During the first strategic session, participants addressed a core mission: how to build a robust veteran economy and shape a modern, respectful image of the veteran in Ukrainian society.
A key insight emerged: state efforts alone will not suffice without the active involvement of veterans and the business community. Together, they must cultivate a public image that is professional, responsible, and valuable to society, moving beyond stereotypes centered solely on trauma.
Business as a Powerful Tool for Reintegration
This is not about “benefits” or “handouts,” but about healthy economic relationships: partnerships, contracts, and entrepreneurship. It is especially critical to work with veterans who return and feel a sense of apathy or disengagement. These individuals are the most vulnerable and require incentives and support to reintegrate into civilian life. Failure to provide this support will lead to much higher national costs—ranging from mental health challenges to social conflicts.
Key Focus Areas
A primary focus is advocacy and legislative reform. The Union is prepared to deploy its analytical expertise to evaluate current regulations and propose changes where the system fails to work. Equally important are partnerships with donors, the government, and support programs, as well as showcasing regional success stories and engaging key opinion leaders.
Participants shared their vision and readiness to work in several directions:
education, mentorship, integration, international relations, legal expertise, development of veteran teams, marketing, technical case studies, and advocacy. This forms the foundation for the Committee’s future operations.
Understanding the Target Groups
The discussion highlighted two distinct groups of veterans:
Those ready to create or grow a business: For this group, the Committee can deliver rapid results through networking, expertise, franchises, and mentorship.
Those who feel “disengaged”: This group requires a dedicated approach—researching root causes and providing individualized support formats that facilitate a return to civilian life without undue pressure.
Next Steps
Following the meeting, it was agreed to consolidate all proposals and developments into a single document, set the date for the next meeting, and continue refining the Committee’s mission and vision.
We thank all participants for their constructive dialogue. Your expertise and openness are helping to build a powerful platform for supporting veteran-owned businesses and driving real change together.
