The Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs (SUP) held a meeting with representatives of the publishing and book distribution industries to identify the key business challenges and develop concrete steps to address them.
Representatives of Ukrainian publishing houses and other companies in the industry joined the event. Participants shared the challenges their businesses are currently facing and outlined the changes that require joint advocacy.
Opening the meeting, SUP Executive Director Kateryna Glazkova emphasized the importance of supporting the publishing industry, which is not only operating amid the war but is also suffering significant losses as a result of Russian attacks.
She stressed that the purpose of the meeting was to hear directly from businesses what solutions they need and determine where SUP can contribute its expertise and advocacy tools.
“It is important to us that this meeting is not just a discussion of problems, but the beginning of work on concrete solutions for the industry,” Kateryna said.
The Key Issues Facing Publishers Today
During the meeting, representatives of publishing businesses spoke about their companies and the challenges they are currently facing. Key topics included access to financing, insurance and compensation for war-related losses, tax issues, working capital, equipment restoration, and workforce challenges.
Andriy Yerashov, Head of SUP’s Analytical Center, presented an analysis of the existing support programs and opportunities currently available to the publishing industry, and outlined issues requiring further consideration and advocacy.
What’s Next
Following the meeting, SUP plans to divide its further work into tactical steps that can help the industry in the short term and strategic changes that will require systematic work with government authorities and international partners.
Kateryna Glazkova also proposed that industry representatives establish a dedicated committee within SUP. It could serve as a platform for bringing publishers together around common issues, developing a consolidated position, and advocating for the necessary changes.
SUP will continue to review the proposals raised by participants and determine the next steps for their implementation. The meeting marked the first step toward systematic cooperation between SUP and representatives of the publishing industry and joint work on concrete solutions for businesses.
